In Preventing Physician Burnout Curing the Chaos and Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine, doctors Paul DeChant and Diane Shannon define burnout, explore the consequences for physicians, patients, and the health care system, and identify the underlying causes that are fueling the epidemic. Based on their extensive interviews, they give voice to patient advocates, burnout researchers, leaders of health care organizations, and the physicians themselves.

DeChant and Shannon also share examples of strategies that hospitals and physician practices across the United States are using to address the root causes of burnout among physicians, including action items for preventing burnout and curbing the crisis.

“It is hard to see how we can create the health care system we want and need on the backs of joyless and unengaged doctors. This well-written, practical book offers the prescription we need to address this crisis.”

Robert Wachter, MD, author of The Digital Doctor Hope, Hype, and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine’s Computer Age

Great book on addressing burnout not just for the healthcare industry but burnout as a whole! I highly recommend the book!
I've been in healthcare informatics started as a practicing physician but rapidly realized that the 'IT guys' were building my new 'black bag' without my input. I was working a lot harder to see the same number of patients as my colleagues but my pay didn't budge even though my quality scores were better. I was burning out, until this book I really didn't have a name for it. Over the past 15 years, arguably the fastest period of growth in healthcare and technology, I've dedicated my life to working with IT and docs to 'make the computer work FOR the docs'.

Paul and Diane have summarized my experiences (and many of my colleagues experiences) very clearly and candidly. They articulate the problems, solutions and ongoing work required in order to return the joy to healthcare!!

In a nutshell, great interviews, quotes and 'real-world' solutions are presented (unlike the many theoretical solutions out there)! Will make a great gift for my colleagues that are running group practices!!
As a Medical Director, I have learned that the principles of Toyota could be an easy way to improve efficiency in healthcare. With pillars build on continuous improvement and respect for people. Toyota's approach is grounded in challenge, kaizen, genchi genbutsu, respect, and teamwork. I purchased this book because it incorporates Toyota principles. I was also looking for solutions to help me personally as well as the teams I help lead. Dr. Paul's book provides the framework that is needed for clinical and operations teams to work together towards the ideal state where physician burnout is no longer a crisis. As an author myself (Fix Your Diet, Fix Your Diabetes), I knew we had diabetes and obesity crises. What I did not know was that the physician burnout crisis was so pervasive. It's time for us all to act. If you care about the healthcare system and the people who are delivering it, this book could be the missing link. Gift it to someone you care about in the healthcare field.

Fix Your Diet, Fix Your Diabetes Your Dietary Solution to Reversing Diabetes
This book speaks to the heart of what's going on with our clinical providers across the country, its a must read!
Good book. Will read again and take notes. Will champion cause at my organization. Highly recommend reading and applying this work.
Excellent book ... insightful ... well-researched ... candid ... and innovative in both its presentation & solutions. Should be required reading for every doctor and administrator in the health care industry.
Arrived on time and was what was expected.
Very practical assessable information for transforming the clinical workplace, improving organizational operations. Great!
